Headucate is a student society based at the University of East Anglia in Norwich. We are formed of university students from any course, who give up their free time to take part in the society by attending talks or actively taking part in our outreach school workshop programme. To be a member of Headucate you must be a registered student at UEA or a recent graduate. Membership costs £3 per year, the minimum price set by the UEA student union to join a society. All membership costs go towards materials for our school workshops. Once a member, it is up to you to decide how much you wish to get involved, you can just attend our evening talks or socials, or become fully trained to run our workshops in schools as part of a small team - you will receive all the training you need to be able to do this.
who are we?
Headucate is one of the newest, most active, and exciting student societies at UEA. We started out as a small group of medical students from Norwich Medical School in 2012 and have grown to become one of the largest UEA societies, open to any student, from any course.
We were voted 'New Society of the Year' in 2012/13 by the UEA student union.
Our overriding aim is to tackle mental health stigma and help end discrimination by running small workshops in schools with children and teenagers to tackle common misconceptions about mental health issues.
We do this as currently there is no mental health teaching in schools, and it is thought that about 50% of lifelong mental illnesses are already established by age 14. Most children do not seek the help they need when they need it.
To deliver our workshops in schools you need to complete 3 pieces of training:
1. Introduction to mental health (delivered by Dr. Mary Howman, a GP specialising in mental health and Patron to Headucate)
2. Safeguarding/child protection (delivered by UEA Outreach)
3. Workshop run-through (delivered by experienced Headucate members)
Our training leads arrange these sessions and they are usually run about twice per term, look out for training dates on the event page, on our facebook group, twitter steam or via email (you must be signed up to the UEA student website and have paid Headucate membership to be on our mailing list, please see 'how to join' above).
